The Western Saddle |

|
|
The whole front section, consisting of the gullet, swell and horn is called the pommel. The rear housing is sometimes called the rear jockey. The small rings just below the latigo carrier are called D-rings and are used to attach the breast collar. The cinch is fastened to the rigging ring by a latigo strap. The slot in the skirt is there to attach the rear cinch, if one is used. |

The English Saddle |

This is a hunt seat saddle. Saddle seat saddles have the same parts, although shaped a little differently. They do not, however, have a knee roll. The girth is buckled to billets, which are found under the flap. Can you identify the Stirrup Leather Keeper? Some English saddles also have D-rings for attaching breast collars. |

This picture shows the correct adjustment of a side check. Yes, I know it's a donkey, but the picture is still a good one! The straps from the bridle, which end in brass rings are check carriers, and the hook on the saddle (you can't quite see it) to which the check fastens is called a waterhook. |
